A Valentine Day Fiasco Chapter 13– The rescue.

At the sighting of the first light of day, John got up and went to brush his teeth. His sleep all through the night was fitful so there was no point staying in bad tossing and turning. He had his bath hurriedly and sat waiting for the morning sun so that he could head out. He felt so powerless sitting at home waiting for the police to do something. He paced back and forth in his room. He couldn’t get why he was so restless. Cynthia was just a really good friend.
His dad seemed to think otherwise though. He tried imagining his life without Cynthia in it and somehow he couldn’t even form the image in his head. He guess he had thought she would always be around. Now the thought of anything happening to her frightened the hell out of him. Shit! I might have just found the one lady to be serious with.  He thought to himself. His mum was going to freak out. Her son might get married as she had hoped and prayed and fasted for. He chuckled. But hat would only happen if she was found. They had to find Cynthia and her friend and they had to do it fast. He was going to go and wake up those lazy bums that called themselves police men. He took his phone and was about to walked out of his house when his phone rang. He checked the id and saw “Private Number” as the caller id.
Cynthia was woken up by the loud noises she heard. It seemed like her captors were having an argument. They seemed to disagreeing a lot since their arrival here. She strained her ears to try to hear what the argument was about.
“I can never trust you guys to do anything right. You were supposed to have kidnapped him the first time but you let him and a lady manhandle you. Now this time around, you kidnapped the girl with her bimbo-like friend instead. What the hell is wrong with you people?” She had heard a man shouting say.
“We are sorry sir.” Another man said.
The voice was very familiar and in a flash she knew who it was. It was the taxi driver that kidnapped her and john that day. His voice was distinct. He was likely the man she recognized earlier yesterday. So it was John they were after. She thought to herself.
She was still thinking about what she had heard when she heard, “Fix it! I don’t care how you do it. Just fix this mess you made. Stupid idiots.”
Shortly after that, the men unlocked the door and gave them water to drink. While she was gulping down the water an idea came to her head as she saw the door open.
“I want to ease myself.” She said.
“Nice try lady. There’s a bucket at the corner of this room. When you are ready someone will untie your legs for you to wee there.” He said and walked out.
She sighed. So much for trying. She said to herself.
“Don’t think of doing it Cynthia.” Rachel said like she had been reading Cynthia’s thoughts.
“But we can’t stay here doing nothing.”
“I know. But it’s really not worth it. You don’t know how many miles you might have to run before you get to civilization.”
Suddenly a man entered.
“You are planning to escape abi? You this stupid bitch!” He shouted and gave the both of them a sound slap.
“I am going to call that stupid man. He better start getting the ransom ready else we will dispose of you guys soon.”
At that he had brought out his phone and dialed a number and spoke with a handkerchief over his mouth.
“Yes. I am sure you are looking for your darling female friend with her friend. If you want them to leave here unarmed, I am going to send you a message with a series of instructions to carry out. Do not try and funny business or else….”
Or else what? John thought but before he could say anything the call had already been disconnected. He needed to head to the police station now but had to proceed carefully. These were criminals and they were probably already watching his every move. He brought out his other line from his bedside table and called his father to inform him of the latest development. He stealthily arrived at the police station and relayed the message he had gotten from the criminal and they waited for the text with the instructions.
The long awaited message arrived. They had little time to work with and a lot of things to do to set the trap for the kidnappers. They quickly devised a plan.
“Are you sure it will work? He asked after they explained it to him.
“It has a ninety percent chance of working.” The police officer that seemed to be their boss answered.
They sounded so sure that he had no choice but to believe them and hope everything would turn out fine. Having worked out and explained how his part would come into play, they whisked him stealthily out of the police building and the plan was set into motion.
After a power tussle between the kidnappers and the police that lasted no more than an hour but was so intense it seemed like it would never end, because the kidnappers were refusing to surrender, Cynthia and Rachel were eventually rescued and taken to safety. The kidnappers were arrested but the day was far from being over then. The criminals identified those who were their sponsors and the leaders of their gang. John got to find out that his beloved brother-in-law was one of the masterminds behind it. He had never trusted Terry but he didn’t know he was this bad. A background check John had carried out on him through a private investigator proved that he owned a legitimate advertising business. However it turned out that that was just a cover up business, one he did on the side. He belonged to a group of criminals who made their money by kidnapping wealthy people or their children and demanding ridiculous amounts of money as ransom before releasing them but they had never being caught. This time around it turned out his gang members had set their eyes on John and his father’s money. Unfortunately for them, this turned out to be the last operation they would ever have again. He felt sorry for Ronke though. If only he had tried a little bit harder and stopped her from marrying him. He said to himself. Now, she had to deal with explaining to Lanre that his father was locked up for being a criminal. John shook his head at the thought. She was a survivor. He knew she’d get over it. But first he had to get to Cynthia. This whole ordeal with the kidnappers had shown him something he hadn’t realized. When it looked like there was going to be a shootout with Cynthia and Rachel caught in the middle, he had never felt so scared in his life and it didn’t help that he could just stand there and not do anything.

He got into his car and started the trip to her house after everything had been sorted out to check up on her and her friend.
